Woman sentenced after cashing in dead husband's social security checks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A former child advocate will spend more than a year in prison after pleading guilty to cashing in social security checks mailed to her husband.

Jan Arnow was a community crusader – warning parents about violent movies and video games.

A federal judge sentenced her to 15 months in prison after she failed to notify the Social Security Administration of her husband’s death in 2003, claiming more than $268,000 in benefits.

The judge said Arnow must pay more than $194,000 in restitution.

Arnow said she used to money for social work in Rwanda and the Congo but investigators said she spent it on travel and living expenses.
