Update on 3 kids hit at bus stop

2 children & driver released from hospital

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Less than a week after being hit by an SUV at the bus stop, one of three children injured has returned to school. Engelhard Elementary shared pictures of a smiling Phillip Neal excited to go back to school on their twitter page last night.

In this newly released video from on board the school bus, you see the SUV drive up behind the bus and then swerve to the bus's right side. LMPD has told us that the driver did not see the bus slowing and swerved to avoid hitting the bus. According to the traffic citation, the lane to the right of the bus was blocked with a parked car and the driver of the SUV traveled up onto the sidewalk and hit the three children.

As for the other two injured, siblings Vanessa and Joc Johnson, an update on the family's GoFundMe page reads: "Thank you everyone for your prayers, your love and your donations! We are so grateful that Jaconiah is out of the hospital and Vanessa is coming along. She is still in a coma and she will have to have cosmetic surgeries."

The family said they will release more information on Vanessa's diagnosis on Friday afternoon.

The driver of the SUV did not have insurance, so both families have set up GoFundMe accounts for medical expenses:

WHAS11 looked into the SUV driver Christopher Johnson's background and learned this was not his first time he has been charged with not maintaining insurance. Johnson had two Failure to Maintain Required Insurance offenses back in 2014, and a Failure to Produce Insurance Card in both 2014 and earlier this year.
