Homeowners discover more damage from Windstorm 2008 after recent rainfall

07:50 AM EDT on Friday, October 17, 2008

WHAS11 coverage

(WHAS11) -If you thought you were lucky enough to escape the major damage of Windstorm 2008, you may want to think again. We’ve had some rain recently, and homeowners are finding out those few missing shingles are causing big problems.

A damp roof is evidence it rained on John and Lois Smith’s house, and the brown spot on the ceiling inside her house is evidence of a water leak.

“In the den, the spot’s growing,” said Lois Smith. “It’s only rained once so it had to happen then.”

John and Lois Smith say at least ¾ of their roof is tarped.

“Ours is partially tarped, but we’re not assured we won’t get leaks where it’s not tarped,” she said.

Several roof tops throughout Louisville, including John and Lois’ are shades of blue.

Wes Beams of Beams Contracting says some people are still awaiting repairs for Windstorm 2008 damage, but some people are just now noticing they have roof damage because of the rain.

“Go out, walk around your yard and check to see if you’re missing roof shingles or there’s metal blown off,” he said. “It could be a repair, it could be more than that and if so they need to call their insurance adjuster.”

A crew from Watertight Roofing still has 19 roofs in one particular condo subdivision to work on—some of the work is done as a precaution.

“You can’t predict Mother Nature and you can’t predict the weather. You can never predict what roofs are going to be like,” said Phil Ritchie of Watertight Roofing.

“I am afraid when it starts raining ... there’s one tarp that’s pretty scraggly I’m not sure it’s going to hold up in bad weather,” said Lois Smith.

At least they have tarps up—other people don’t, despite missing shingles and possible damage they don’t see.

“I have a feeling some people will have a lot of damage. More than they anticipated or thought,” said Smith.
