Late night fire drives family of five from their South Louisville home
08:55 AM EDT on Monday, July 21, 2008
(WHAS11) - An apartment caught fire in Kenwood late last night just west of Louisville International Airport.
Police say five people had to be evacuated from the building, including three children. All members of that family of five is safe this morning after the fire destroyed the second floor of an apartment.
Fire crews left the scene this morning around 3AM after receiving the initial call just after 10PM last night. The fire started at 105 East Amherst, which is a house converted to apartments.
The initial call was because of smoke but Louisville Fire and Rescue had to call out for extra help to fight the fire. Fire fighters on the scene say the family of five was inside the home when the fire started, but everyone appears to have gotten out safely.
The investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing, although one of the possible causes was lightning from last night’s storms. Some witnesses on the scene claim they could smell meth making materials coming out of the home during the fire.
