Consumer Watch: Beware of businesses with no references
05:59 PM EST on Wednesday, November 12, 2008
(WHAS11) - Our consumer watch this week takes us to the south end where a couple of Harley Davidson enthusiasts say their wheels have been taken from underneath them.
Now out $800 dollars, their bike is in hundreds of pieces and the repair man is out of business.
Willie Dewitt loves to ride.
“I’m a biker at heart,” he says.
And when his bike is whole and running, so is Willie.

But right now Willie and his wife’s 1978 Harley Davidson Sportster is in hundreds of pieces.
When Carrie Dewitt first contacted WHAS11’s Andy Treinen, their bike was locked up. The owner of American Custom Cycles Frank Dallas closed up shop and went out of business after charging and taking $800 dollars to repair the Harley but he didn’t finish the job and the bike was in pieces all over the floor.
But the Dewitt’s had no way to contact Frank Dallas. His cell phone was disconnected and the business was locked up. Eventually the property owner posted a sign to rent the building to someone else.
Carrie and Willie aren’t the only people looking for Frank Dallas. The building owner says he hasn’t paid his rent and there are still motorcycles inside the building.
The guy who owns the property doesn’t expect to recover his $5000 dollars in rent. But he did allow Willie to get his bike out which was in 200 to 300 pieces.
The engine of the Harley is in Willie’s living room, his is gas tank and pipes are in the family van and the frame is in a neighbor’s garage.
The Dewitt’s are hoping to get their money back so they can pay someone else to fix the bike but that could prove difficult because they don’t have his address.
The owner of the property told WHAS11’s Andy Treinen that Frank Dallas is a guy who just got in over his head. And in a bad economy more and more businesses are going under. So make sure you do business with companies that have a history and references - and make sure you have more than just a cell phone number as a contact or you too could find the love of your life in pieces.
