Louisville -- They are a group who for every month since the Iraqi war
began have been protesting in the City of Louisville.
Now they feel things are beginning to change and more people are
beginning to see their point of view.
Declining poll numbers in support of the Iraqi war is a welcome sign to
the Louisville Peace Action Committee.
On Sunday, they held another protest vigil at the corner of Bardstown
Road and Eastern Parkway.
Many of their signs say "impeach Bush", "Bring our troops home," and
"End the War."
They asked for honks of protests, drivers complied.
The group also believes their effort was helped when a mother decided to
camp out in Crawford, Texas.
"Cindy Sheehan was touched the conscious of America and we support her,"
says Sam Avery of the Peace Action Committee. "But I think it is
important to realize this is not about personalities this is about war.
This war is a very serious mistake on the part of our country."
"There just does not seem to be a real answer on how to get out of it,"
says Harold Trainer, a Vietnam veteran. "That's they way it was in
Vietnam. I was there in 69-70 and I was back in 74-75 when the war was
ended."
Not everyone shares this group's view.
At the Kentucky State Fair there is another form of expression.
The State Democratic Party has a huge roll of paper, they call it a
scroll.
Anyone of passes by the booth is asked to sign the scroll with their
thoughts for soldiers now serving in Iraq. The scroll will be sent over
to troops in the field.
The messages are universal.
Many thank the military for the job they are doing. They say to simply
keep up the good work and stay safe.
Among those who have signed, the family of a Louisville marine who has
already done two tours of duty in Iraq.
"The war itself is something that is progressing, it doesn't happen over
night as far as change," says Duane Cooke, an E-5 in the Marine Corps.
"Alot of good going on that you dont hear about just stay the course
kind of stuff."
"I think the news doesn't show as much as they need to about what the
guys are doing over there," says hi swife Katie. "I think they need to
show more of the good they do the building they have rebuilt for schools
and they are helping people over there."
It is difficult to say which side is going to win out in this contest.
The Peace Action Committee has a booth at the State Fair and people are
expressing their opinions. Some opinions will be swayed by how well the
war is going.
The Democratic Party says it will have the scroll out for the rest of
the State Fair.
The Louisville Peace Action Committee will keep protesting each month
until the war in Iraq is over.
