Translators help bridge language barrior
06:42 PM EDT on Thursday, August 17, 2006
In the Jefferson County Public School System, students speak more than 72 different languages with Spanish being the most common after English. Almost 13,000 students in the system speak English as a second language or speak limited or no English.
So what happens if a child who doesn't speak English well gets on the wrong bus? The transportation department says there is training for this and some bus drivers take Spanish classes.
During the first week of school the department has translators available.
