Building in New Louisville exceeds the Green standard
09:51 PM EST on Monday, November 24, 2008
(WHAS11) - At a glance, it’s a 110-year-old, brown brick and mortar structure like so many other buildings in and around Louisville, but at closer inspection, this 15 thousand square foot building is actually green, really, really, green. Film producer Gill Holland and his wife Augusta own the green building at 732 East Market Street, and made it a mission two years ago to take green to the extreme
Gill Holland said, “We’re assuming LEED Platinum Status, assuming we get that we will be the only commercial building maybe in Kentucky, but at least in Louisville.”
I got the full tour from gill, and we’ll talk more about that LEED Platinum stuff later, but for now, there really is so much to show in so little time, let’s go right from top to bottom through this amazing museum of environmental friendliness! We’ll start with the solar panel powerhouse up top.
Holland said, “We have 81 solar panels, providing almost 15 kilowatts, so the building on a sunny day is off the grid, in a metaphorical sense, we’re still tapped into the grid, there we have a green roof so there’s sedums planted and you’ll see in the summer there’s a design, we did it in a Norwegian, rose painting.”
The green roof has many jobs, by collecting heat it saves energy, it reduces run-off water, supplies oxygen to the air, and could help limit the urban heat island effect.
Now, on we go, but remember, when touring the green building don’t let gill catch you using the elevator.
The green building is green inside and out, there’s event space out back with a vertical garden planned, parking space for a hybrid car, a recycling center, rain catchers, and on and on.
You really have to see the green building for yourself to take in everything from the natural smell, to the feel of the earth friendly stone, and wood.
If you have any intentions on going green, or just want to check out a really cool work of architecture, the green building is certainly worth of a tour.
