A local organization is reaching out to help people keep their homes, as more people are getting hit with salary freezes and worrying about keeping their jobs.

These are the faces of people affected by foreclosure and the Louisville Urban League Counselor Vickie James knows how they feel.

“People are frustrated. Unfortunately, we do get people crying and we want make sure we have our tissues in our office,” she said. “It impacts other areas - areas other than dollars. It’s the family and it’s the children.”

Frustrated and overwhelmed, these people came to this “Foreclosure Prevention Workshop,” hoping to find help.

“There are always options. It’s just not always easy to get it done.”

“We would expect even more people than we have tonight because there are a lot of foreclosures in Louisville. And we expect that number to rise in 2009,” said Mitchell.

They say often times people don’t know where to turn when faced with foreclosure, so, the workshop offered three major tips:

If you lost your job or became ill, ask about a loan modification

Or consider selling your home before it’s foreclosed on.

But if you’re in foreclosure seek legal help to make sure things are settled correctly.

Vickie expects next year she’ll see more people here, “Young couples, and single people to people in their 80.” All with different stories—she says many of them are sad. One woman she recently help lived in her home for 39 years.

“After 39 years, same home. Those are the very sad ones, when people have lived in their house, their neighborhood, their sense of security; it’s very frightening for them.”

The Louisville Urban League says they have a high success rate when it comes to helping people out.
