Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - If you could immediately save five cents, ten cents or 15 cents a gallon every time you fill up, would you go for it?
One Louisville councilman says that’s what we’ll save if we get rid of re-formulated gas. Stations in metro Louisville are required to sell re-formulated gas because it’s less polluting but it costs more and Councilman Doug Hawkins says its time to give drivers a break and dump it.
Reformulated gas has been around since the early 90’s when we still had the vet test in Louisville.
It once added a few pennies per gallon but nowadays that’s closer to ten cents or more and some want it gone.
If you gas up in metro Louisville you’re paying a little extra for reformulated gas—a capitulation to the EPA that argued Louisville wasn’t doing enough to stem pollution back in the early 90’s but one local lawmaker says he’s had enough.
The rap on reformulated gas is that it may burn cleaner, but it costs more and gets fewer miles per gallon. Over at Cecil’s Standard, long time station manager Bob Arnold says a few of his customers like the added cost. But if there’s going to be a revolt, don’t be disappointed if the air pollution control district is reluctant to lead the charge.
A gas for all seasons
I don't understand why Jefferson County has to have the reformulated fuel when so many people who live outside the county work or shop in Jefferson county and they don't have to buy it. I think that the state our economy is in that we need to do everything in our power to help the citizens out.
Reformulated or not reformulated? I'm not sure, but one thing I'm sure of is either way, we the consumer, are being screwed at the pump. As we all have experienced, when the price of oil goes up, it seems as though with a matter of an hour or two so does the pump price. However, in the past month, the price of oil has dropped 21% but the price at the pump is down about 8%. Am I missing something? It trickles down about a penny a day, yet it can jump 10-20 cents on the specualtion that oil will be going up?
RFG is a scam.
IT SEEMS THAT USING THE REFORMULATED FUEL HAS DONE LITTLE OR NOTHING TO IMPROVE THE AIR QUALITY.IT JUST LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER SCHEME TO GET MORE MONEY FROM THE CONSUMER. GAS HERE IN JERRERSON COUNTY HAS ALWAYS BEEN HIGHER THAN THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES AND FOR NO REASON.THOSE PEOPLE WHO LIVE OUT OF THE COUNTY ARE BRINGING CARS INTO THE CITY USING THE NON REFORMULATED GAS, SO WHAT'S THE USE OF US GETTING GOUGED.
There's no need for it!
Obviously YES! Anyone answering NO should be smacked! Why hasn't it been done yet?
Im all for saving the planet, it's the only home we have. I just feel that enough is enough. When do we as a society re-evaluate the cost/worth system. When do we decide when a barrel of oil is only worth so much? We are all far to greedy and greed is key to our destruction.
Also do away with at least half the taxes and fees on a gallon. How much would this save???
Why should we keep paying for this gas when we have interstates running through our city? How many vehicles do we have driving from other areas and states that do not require RFG. I know that other cities have RFG and they don't pay as much as we do. How can that be? Our city gouges us everytime an event comes here (Street Rods,State Fair, Derby...). Watch the price of gas go up as these events start even though the oil prices are dropping. I see no reason to gouge us again just because it is summer.
