Mayor's Operation Brightside volunteers help keep Louisville beautiful

09:33 PM EDT on Saturday, October 25, 2008

If you noticed Louisville looks a little “cleaner” today, it’s thanks to volunteers from all over the city who spent Saturday morning cleaning up other people’s litter and mess.  It is a part of “Brightside’s” initiative to keep Louisville beautiful.

WHAS 11’s Adrianna Hopkins caught up with one group on Frankfort Ave. that did more than just pick up trash, they did a little gardening too.

“Alright - how about let’s scrape this up here.”  The Redfern Family woke up pretty early this morning.  “I’d rather be playing video games,” said Noah Redfern.

Instead, he was out helping Brightside clean up Louisville. The Redfern’s are just one family of 6,000 volunteer that spent Saturday morning making Louisville that much more beautiful.

“This is Brightside’s highest number ever. We’re so proud people come together to make a big difference in Louisville,” said Lisa Gunterman, the Event Supervisor for Brightside. “The great thing about this cleanup, is that everybody you see how here today could have been doing something else; sleeping in, going to soccer games, but instead they got up this morning to make a difference in this town.”

On Frankfort Avenue that meant raking leaves, trimming the shrubs and packing it up.  “It’s a mess, I’ll tell ya,” said one volunteer.

“We live in the neighborhood and we use the neighborhood, and we wanted to come out and help clean it up,” said Stephanie Redfern.  Hopkins asked Noah, “Has you have that this part of town is really dirty?”  “Yes, it has been,” said Noah.

So even though he and his brother Eli didn’t play video games this morning, they learned a valuable lesson.

“If there’s one thing we’ve seen today, it’s not to be a litter bug,” said Ben Deetsch, who volunteered with Stephanie, Noah and Eli.
