Police investigating city's 42nd murder this year

08:29 PM EDT on Sunday, August 22, 2004

By George Sells / WHAS11 News

Louisville Metro Police are investigating the city's 42nd murder of the year, after a man was gunned down early Sunday morning in the West End.

Just after midnight, someone opened fire, shooting 33-year-old Dewhon McAfee on South 28th Street. McAfee survived for several hours before dieing at University Hospital around 9:30 a.m.

According to police, McAfee was outside of his apartment when a fight broke out, possibly over a woman. Several shots were fired — one witness reported hearing as many as nine.

McAfee had a 23-page arrest record with many violent charges.

This is the second murder in Louisville this week. Early Saturday morning, 51-year-old Michael Williams allegedly stabbed 63-year-old Willie Whitaker during a fight outside of his home in the 2700 block of W. Jefferson.
