03/06/2007: Governor's Race

12:46 PM EST on Tuesday, March 6, 2007

The race for Kentucky governor is starting to take shape.

WHAS11 has the first poll of the season to see where the candidates stack up.

In our exclusive WHAS11 Survey USA poll, Ernie Fletcher holds a slim lead over challenger Anne Northup.

Thirty-three percent of likely voters said they would keep Fletcher in office, 31 percent said they would choose Northup.

Western Kentucky businessman Billy Harper got 13 percent of the vote, but there are still a lot of voters out there with 23 percent choosing "other" or "undecided."

On the Democratic side, former lieutenant governor Steve Henry leads the crowded field with 26 percent of the vote. Steve Beshear pulled in 15 percent and House Speaker Jody Richards got 13 percent.

With seven Democratic candidates, no one seems like they could get the 40 percent of the vote necessary to keep from having a run-off.
