Lost sheep ministries
08:09 PM EST on Sunday, February 11, 2007
In the spirit of Valentines Day we have found a remarkable love story. The thing is - many of these people have never met.
A simple centerpiece and hot chocolate can warm the body and soul.
This has become a Thursday night ritual that takes the lost and helps them find their way.
The program is called lost sheep. One night a week this group of volunteers - led by Brent Calloway, Kris Salyer and Josh May - take in people who literally live in the woods.
The volunteers serve them food - and give them blankets, clothes and shoes.
The group doesn’t get a lot of attention - they meet behind cable Baptist church in the Potter’s house in Butchertown, a location that’s off the beaten path.
And that’s what its all about - love for complete strangers.
A love that has touched people like Essie - she’s 51, she has liver cancer, she was an addict, a prostitute, a criminal and she’s homeless - but she goes around table to table trying to encourage others to remain upbeat.
And Brian - he’s from Cocomo, Indiana - he doesn’t know if his parents are still living - he has a 30 year old daughter he’d like to see - he wouldn’t tell me why he left home several years ago - only saying he’s a journeyman - he lives in the woods.
A man named Ronnie saw his best friend murdered on the streets this year - 18 years ago he walked out on his wife and family - he was an alcoholic.
Another man was a jeweler - he went to prison for 10 years on a robbery conviction - when he got out his family disowned him. He wants his old life back. With the help of lost sheep they are learning to love the possibility of what they can become.
