Officials preview upcoming Ky. State Fair

WHAS11's Tabnie Dozier looks into ride safety as Kentuckiana approaches the beginning of the Ky. State Fair.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The 2016 Kentucky State Fair kicks off on August 18 amid multiple instances across our country of county and state fair accidents. As you can imagine, ride safety is on the minds of those on the Kentucky State Fair Board.

Steve Kelly, Interim CEO and Executive Director of the Kentucky State Fair Board says, “We actually met last week with some of the ride inspectors and some of the state and local electrical inspectors to make sure we have a plan in place and that the rides that will come through the fair are safe.”

Kelly says beyond you trusting the safety measures will be followed, fairgoers can expect most of the same classic attractions along with some new additions in the food department. “Tot-chos are what they are going to be called—those are tater tots with cheese and sour cream and jalapenos. This is Larry Sevorn, one of our long time vendors, he's been with us for years, he's also doing a sweet potato tater tot,” Kelly says.

TARC Riders will receive $6 admission from Fourth Street and on regular routes to the Expo Center. Active duty military and veterans along with their families are free until 5 p.m. on Sunday August 21. Seniors 55 and older are free Tuesday August 23 until 5 p.m.

“Get your tickets early, this is probably the cheapest advance tickets since the ‘80s. It’s a $6 advance ticket if you go now until Wednesday night.”

Also to ease the wallet, carload day is Wednesday August 24. On that day it costs $20 for an entire vehicle including parking. This deal is also good until 5 p.m.

So get ready—gates open at 7 a.m. on August 18 and exhibits will be ready to go by 9:00.
