Residents in Taylor Berry neighborhood live in fear as crime soars

Taylor Berry neighbors concerned about crime

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- It's become a hotspot for crime and now some residents in Louisville's Taylor Berry neighborhood say they are living in fear.

LMPD responded to a shooting in the Taylor Berry neighborhood Sunday morning along the 1000 block of Winkler Avenue. One person was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. As police continue to investigate the case, some neighbors are raising concerns about the area’s ongoing battle with crime.

According to LMPD crime data, there have been 104 assaults within one half mile of the weekend shooting scene over the past six months. There have been three murders, within that same radius, since Memorial Day.

Taylor Berry is a relatively small neighborhood. It stretches approximately one mile north and south between Algonquin Parkway and Berry Boulevard and runs eastward from Seventh Street Road to Taylor Boulevard. Bobby Fehribach has lived in the neighborhood his entire life, and like many of his neighbors, crime is something he has come to expect.

“There’s always cops up and down my block and it never changes. I mean it’s kind of wild over here,” said Fehribach. "There’s literally a police precinct right up the street and it doesn’t stop them, it doesn’t slow them down. So I don’t know. I really don’t -- and that’s the scariest part about it.”

Stephanie Smith said she is saving up money so she can move. Smith is raising her five-month-old son near Winkler and continually fears for his safety.

"It’s getting to the point where you can’t tell what’s fireworks and what’s a gun now,” said Smith. “There’s a lot of drug deals going on, violence, people getting killed in the middle of the night, hearing guns shooting – everything.”

No arrests have been made in the Winkler shooting. If you have any information for police you can leave an anonymous tip at 574-LMPD.
