LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- It was a chilling wake-up call. Samantha Zephel and her husband were among a number of residents awakened by a knock at their door early Friday morning. As they stepped outside, officers told them two of their neighbors had been killed and detectives were canvassing the neighborhood for clues.
“When they came up to ask us questions you know it kind of blew us away what had occurred cause it’s right across the street,” Zephel recalled. “It could have happened to us. It could have happened to anyone. It’s scary.”
Zephel lives in a quaint neighborhood off Greenwood Road, approximately one mile east of Pleasure Ridge Park High School. The knock at her door came shortly after Louisville Metro Police Department responded to a reported home invasion in the 7600 block of Gerald Avenue.
Officers found father and son Thomas E. Holmes, 51, and Thomas A. Holmes, 20, shot to death inside their home. The coroner later determined both men died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident happened steps away from Zephel’s front door. The mother-of-two said the Holmes family had only lived on Gerald Avenue for a month or two.
“It’s scary,” said Zephel. It's scary knowing the world that my two kids are growing up in."
LMPD Sgt. Donny Burbrink said neighbors should stay vigilant and report anything suspicious but said there was no reason for residents to live in fear.
Burbrink said it was unlikely the crime was random, adding that detectives were still trying to determine if the victims were the mistaken or intended targets.
"It's still in the intimacy of its investigation," said Burbrink. "What we have right now could change at any point and time."
