Woman shares story of survival and hope ahead of health event

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- An event coming up on February 9 at the Olmstead combines women's fashion with important health information.

It's called Pearls and Pumps. Women like Lydia Allen are ready to share her story of surviving breast cancer and they want other women to know they are not alone.

Allen wears many hats wife, mom, grandmother, even artist. She is working on a new project with her wool applique's. She makes unique wool designs for fun to show and to sell. She calls them peace works, but by far her most personal work is one called "Lydia’s journey."

She is a cancer survivor and for six months after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December of 2009. She says the first week was the toughest.

Her world turned upside down, but she would find calm and strength in her husband, her daughters, her grandchildren and friends she called her "Monday morning girls."

Allen has a new normal and a new appreciation for everything around her.
