Organizations partner for National Fire Prevention week

National Fire Prevention Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Sunday kicks off National Fire Prevention week and two local organizations are doing their part to ensure families are safe.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross and Almost Family have partnered up for the Home Fire Campaign to raise awareness, reduce injuries and save lives.

Almost Family is an in-home personal care service and so far the organization has been in about 3,000 homes and installed 1,300 smoke detectors.

The Red Cross says having emergency plans and up to date equipment can be the difference between life and death.

“The number one reason people die in a home fire is because they don’t have working smoke alarms. So this was a significant opportunity to partner with somebody that is in someone’s home,” Jennifer Adrio of the Red Cross said.

Most of the campaign is geared toward the elderly, low income homes or those with health issues.

On Saturday, volunteers and the Jeffersontown Fire Department will spend the day canvassing area neighborhoods to check smoke detectors and help with fire escape plans.
