New snow leopard arrives at Louisville Zoo

LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- The Louisville Zoo has a new addition: a two-year-old snow leopard named NeeCee.

NeeCee comes from the Miller Park Zoo. She will rotate time in the exhibit with the Zoo's 6-year-old male leopard, Kimti.

A new snow leopard exhibit is expected to open in 2019. The Zoo will be breaking ground on this project soon.

Snow leopards, which stand at about two feet high at the shoulder and weigh 55 to 165 pounds, are natively found in the mountains of Central Asia, such as the Himalayas. Extremely agile, they can leap up to 49 feet high. They have special paw pads which help them walk on snow and protect from cold. They are lists as vulnerable on the IUCN List of Threatened Species.
