LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A new hotel project broke ground Thursday in Nulu. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer along with other city leaders announced construction of the brand new Home2 Suites by Hilton is officially underway.
The Home2 Suites will sit at the corner of Hancock and Jefferson Streets, very close to the downtown hospitals and medical centers. Project leaders said they're hoping the new hotel will give people with loved ones in the hospital a convenient place to stay.
The new five-story hotel will bring 100 guest rooms to the Nulu area and provide a walkable option for visitors to Louisville's medical district. For people with loved ones in the hospital for an extended period of time, the hotel will include a fitness center, pool and laundry facility.
The Home2 Suites is not limited to people visiting the medical district, it's open to anyone. City leaders said the project is another step in expanding the downtown footprint.
“I want you to think back to some 20 plus years ago when the sidewalks used to roll up after 5:00 and you'd see the tumbleweeds roll through. Now you're starting to see what persistence and intentionality look like,” said District 4 Councilman David Tandy.
“Our city is transforming, and this neighborhood is certainly transforming as well. We've got about $8 billion of capital being invested in our city right now,” said Mayor Fischer.
The Hilton hotel will not be far from a number of local restaurants, art galleries, specialty stores and some of the big downtown attractions like the Louisville Slugger museum and the Science Center. Mayor Fischer said the project will also help with the city's tourism industry.
The project will also create new jobs in construction and in the hospitality field.
The new hotel is expected to be complete by June of 2017.
