LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The community’s help is needed during the holiday season to help care for the elderly in Metro Louisville.
Meals on Wheels, a program for homebound seniors who have no means to prepare meals for themselves, is looking for a few good drivers.
Food is delivered to more than 400 people 5-days a week.
Another 400 seniors are able to visit some of the 22 congregate sites and sit and talk, participate in activities and socialize.
Beyond delivering meals, the service is able to personally check on the seniors daily.
“Every meal that we deliver goes directly to the person and if they seem a little off that day or don’t answer the door, we go into emergency mode. We will contact their families and at times, we’ve had to call the police to do a safety check – so this also gives peace of mind to their family members,” Faith Aeilts said.
Volunteers are needed to help drive and deliver the meals, write holiday cards and bring cheer to the seniors.
