Louisville woman celebrates 90th birthday at the barre

Lou. woman celebrates 90th Bday at the Barre

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS 11)--Joann Brooks sets the barre high.  The Pure Barre star is still lifting, bending and stretching at the age of 90.

“I kind of set goals for myself and I wanted to get 200 classes in and then I wanted to go until I was 90,” says Brooks.

Brooks can now check both of those goals off her list.  She has taken more than 300 Pure Barre classes and April 6th marks her 90th birthday!

“Nobody is more surprised than I am, I had no idea I'd make it to 90!” said Brooks.

But she's not stopping there.

“My next goal is to hit 500 classes,” said Brooks.

Brooks started taking Pure Barre six years ago at the Louisville studio off of Westport Road.

“I Saw the sign and walked in and asked them if they'd take me,” recalls Brooks.

You can find Brooks in the studio just about every Monday, she's become the heart of the noon class.

“She can hold positions for just as long as people half her age and a third of her age, it's awesome,” said Pure Barre Instructor Madison Eberenz.

Eberenz typically teaches Brooks on Mondays and says she is an inspiration to everyone.

“She brightens up the room and makes us all work a little bit harder I think,” said Eberenz.

Pure Barre is not an easy workout. The 55-minute class is a full body burn that takes strength, coordination and whole lot of determination.  Brooks says she's come a long way since her first class years ago.

“I was a real klutz.”

But the retired elementary school teacher has worked her (barre) socks off to get where she is today, looking and feeling anything but 90 years old.  She says there's no secret to her great health but she does have a few rules.

“I do take the stairs, I never take an elevator if there is one,” said Brooks.

Whether it's walking up the stairs or lifting, toning and burning at Pure Barre, Brooks gives it her all every day, crushing her goals and doing it in style.

From her hot pink barre socks to bright red Converse sneakers, Brooks adds a little color and a whole lot of flare to the Pure Barre community.

“She brightens up the studio not only with her smile but with her awesome style,” said Eberenz.
