Louisville Water Company plans treatment after chemical spill

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Officials have confirmed that a damaged barge leaked a large amount of a liquid into the Ohio River near Cincinnati.

Kelly Dearing Smith with the Louisville Water Company, says there is no reason to panic. All drinking water in Louisville is perfectly safe. Smith said the spill was more than 100 miles upriver from where the Louisville Water Company collects water.

Scientists with the water company are testing the water and provide the adequate treatments.

They estimate the spill wouldn't reach Louisville until sometime next week. The company does not anticipate any issues with water quality in the coming days and will keep the public updated on the treatment process.
