LMPD investigating two sexual assaults near UofL

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Metro Police are investigating two sexual assaults that occurred near the University of Louisville campus this week.

Police say a woman was carjacked and sexually assaulted on 3rd Street and Gaulbert Avenue on Monday and a female student was held at gunpoint and sexually assaulted on 7th Street and Shipp Avenue on Tuesday.

"Both of these are in close proximity of the University of Louisville. One of these victims, to our knowledge, is not a UofL student, and the other one is," Tony Gibson, LMPD Sex Crimes Unit, said.

As police continue to investigate they are urging students to move around in pairs.

"We would like to express the importance of your surroundings, to move if you can in pairs, or groups, and just be mindful of what's going on around you at this time," Gibson said.

At this time police do not believe that the assaults near UofL are connected in any way to the recent string of assaults at Red Roof Inns.
