LMDC officer suspended after racially-charged social media post

Metro Corrections officer suspended without pay

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A Metro Corrections officer who was reprimanded after sharing a racially-charged post on social media has been suspended without pay.

Sgt. Derek Hale shared a meme in a July Facebook post illustrating the racial tension between police and minorities across the country and added his own comment: “Haha truth.”

Hale later apologized and promised to work to “bridge the divide between our community members and law enforcement community.”

Following a meeting with Metro Corrections, WHAS11 News obtained a copy of a letter sent today in which jail director Mark Bolton notified Hale that he is suspended for 29 days without pay and is demoted from the rank of sergeant.

Hale must also undergo training about implicit bias.
