Lawsuit against JCPS over physical restraint

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A lawsuit claims a security guard broke a Jefferson County Public Schools student’s collarbone when he physically restrained him.

The lawsuit, filed Monday, allegedly happened at the Riverview program inside Breckenridge Metro High School in May 2015.

The suit states the student, who was diagnosed with behavioral disorders, threw a pencil at his teacher and was sent to a “cool down” room.

It was when the student was walking to that room, security guard Kevin Watson allegedly threw the student to the ground and used a martial arts-type maneuver to subdue him.

Both Watson and school staff are accused of failing to contact emergency services after the student told them he heard a bone crack and felt sick.
