Keeping guns away from children, Norton Children's Hosp. releases statistics

LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- It's a story we report far too often,  a child gets hold of a gun leading to an accidental shooting.

The latest incident happened in Jeffersontown when a 2-year-old boy shot himself in the head earlier in November.

It happened in the parking lot of an auto dealership on South Hurstbourne. Officers say the child accidentally shot himself in the head while his parents were looking at a car nearby.

Norton Children's Hospital says 18 children have been brought in with gunshot wounds. Three of those children died.

Hospital officials recommend keeping your firearms safely stored and out of the reach of children, store your ammunition separately and make sure all guns have child-resistant gun locks.
