Neighbors remember man killed in Jeffersonville fire

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A bouquet of flowers was left on the doorsteps of a home where a man tragically lost his life. It’s a sign of heartbreak in the Cherry Hill neighborhood of Jeffersonville after a deadly fire Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 9th and French Streets in Jeffersonville just after 8 p.m. Tuesday. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Sgt. Justin Ames with the Jeffersonville Fire Department said the homeowner did have a working smoke detector.

"They were on scene within three minutes, to find heavy fire coming from the front of the structure, our crews made an aggressive attack and then a search of the structure, finding that one person was inside," said Ames.

"The way he went, I knew where he was sitting. I knew where they were going to find him," said neighbor Pat Raidy.

Reidy has lived on this street for more than 50 years and knew the victim, his neighbor, very well.

"I hope the smoke got him before the fire, and I'm thinking it did, but he was just a good boy," said Raidy.

Raidy said his neighbor lived in that home as a child and had moved back in the last few years.

"I just sort of took him under my wing, and taking care of his yard, his house for him as I did for his mother for 10 years," said Raidy. “He was 59-years-old, and I would be working in the backyard and he would come out and sit, his oxygen on. He always had his oxygen on. He was just a good boy."

Raidy said a few of his neighbors tried to save the victim before firefighters arrived, but the home was already engulfed in flames.

"That was just about all you could do is just stand back, that was it," said Raidy.

The victim's identity has not yet been released by the Clark County Coroner's Office. The investigation into the fire could take another two weeks.
