JEFFERSONVILLE (WHAS11) – A man accused of robbing and assaulting an elderly woman at her Jeffersonville home is now in custody.
The incident happened on April 6, 2016, and according to the Jeffersonville Police Department, 43-year-old William J. Patterson approached the female victim at her home in the 600 block of Chestnut Street.
Patterson began talking to her and eventually asked her if there was work he could do for her around her house. When the man was doing the work the female was lured into her garage where he closed the door and kept her from leaving, according to police.
Police said Patterson threatened, assaulted, stole her phone and demanded additional property.
The woman was tied up before the man fled and stole her vehicle. According to police, the woman was able to free herself and got a neighbor to call police.
Her vehicle was later found in New Albany.
Patterson, of Charlestown, Ind., was arrested on Sept. 19 after a five-month investigation. Police said he admitted to his involvement in the April 6 assault.
Patterson is charged with robbery with injury, automobile theft, criminal confinement, strangulation and battery by bodily waste.
