Black bear spotted in southern Ind. as spring arrives

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – It’s the first day of spring and the southern Indiana black bear has been spotted.

Officials say the bear was spotted near Butlerville, Indiana, north of Madison.

The first sightings of the bear began last year when he swam across the Ohio River from Kentucky to Indiana. He was later spotted in Corydon, Indiana roaming to Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge.

Those who were lucky enough to see him said he never caused any harm.

One other black bear may still be roaming at Bernheim Forest but no sightings of him yet.

The bear sightings have been the closest ever to the Louisville area in decades.
