LAGRANGE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Adopt, don't shop. It's a common phrase, but the Humane Society of Oldham County is making it easier than ever to do so.
The organization celebrated the grand opening of its first off-site adoption center Wednesday morning, joined by a handful of community leaders and supporters.
"It is a huge day for us. This community partnership with Feeder Supply is just the most fantastic thing that will allow us to reach more people and more animals,” Humane Society of Oldham County President Michele Culp said.
The shelter is located at the new Feeder's Supply in LaGrange. It's right off 71 North along South Highway 53. The address is 1806 Milestone Village Drive in LaGrange.
The Humane Society of Oldham County started back in 1986 as the county's first no-kill animal shelter. Since Oldham County is an independent humane society, leaders said this exposure greatly helps with name recognition and continued support from the community.
"As far as the store goes, people won't have to travel all the way into Louisville. It will reach people in the rural counties that adjoin Oldham County. It allows us the same thing. We can reach more people. It gives us more visibility, which we really need,” Culp said. "We're killing a million animals a year in our country. We're rescuing these animals. The catch phrase is adopt, don't shop because so many animals in shelters need homes. There's a million reasons to adopt. These are good animals, and they just need to have a loving home forever."
The adoption shelter is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday to start. The Humane Society plans to expand those hours in the future.
Adoption fees range from $50-$400 depending on the breed and type of animal.
There is a discount on all adoptions all day long Wednesday, Nov. 15 to celebrate the grand opening.
This location is the 20th Feeder’s Supply store to open.
