There are a few people who qualify as true broadcasting greats in Louisville’s rich TV & Radio history. Van Vance, who joined WHAS TV & Radio in 1957 is in that elite group. He worked with all the big names here: Cawood Ledford, Milton Metz, Phyllis Knight, Fred Wiche, Mort Crim, Ken Rowland and Chuck Taylor.
Van visited the station because he’s promoting the Colon Walk this Saturday at 8 a.m. at Iroquois Park. He talked about his brush with a nearly always fatal cancer: pancreatic cancer. In this interview, you’ll hear some great stories about the early days at WHAS, and how he survived major surgery.
On a side note, those of us who’ve been here for awhile remember Van for his professionalism, and that fact that he could run out to the studio and deliver an entire sportscast with video with no script, just handwritten notes!
