Family outraged after 95-year-old man scammed, robbed

A warning tonight from one local family after a 95-year-old man unknowingly let thieves inside his South Louisville home.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Image after image of two men caught in the act.

“These people aren't going to stop here. And we don't want this to happen to someone else,” Rhonda Hicks, victim’s daughter-in-law, said.

Hicks is one of his caregivers. He was left alone for just a few minutes on Saturday and she says that's when a man knocked on the door saying he was a plumber working next door and needed to check his water pressure.

The victim walked the man down to his basement.  Hicks says the man pretended to look at the pipes in the basement. That’s when the second man came into the home.

“He went through all the drawers up here, upstairs, drawers were open, file cabinets were open.  The bed I sleep in, the sheets were ripped off where he had gone under the mattress,” Hicks said.

Hicks’ father-in-law had celebrated his 95th birthday on Wednesday. His family had given him $320. It was gone along with some of his late wife's jewelry.

“It was something he was keeping to give his daughters when his time came...he didn't want to let it go yet,” Hicks said.

A birthday balloon in the living room and leftover birthday cake are now the only items left from the birthday celebration – his birthday gift now just a distant memory, stolen by these thieves.

The family told WHAS11 News they believe someone had been watching the house and waited for the caregiver to leave before striking.

The family also says the getaway car was a very large, white SUV, with large shiny rims and tinted windows.  If you have any information, you can call LMPD's anonymous tip line, 574-LMPD.
