Family of 16-year-old who died in Ky. detention center seeking damages

HARDIN CO., Ky. (WHAS11) -- The family of a 16-year-old who died in a Kentucky-run youth detention center is now seeking nearly $27 million in damages.

That's according to new documents filed in federal court.

Sixteen-year-old Gynnya McMillen died while in custody at the Lincoln Village Juvenile Detention Center in Hardin County.

McMillen's family filed notice in a federal lawsuit on April 18 identifying more than 20 potential witnesses.

In the notice, they break down the amount of money they're asking for, including more than $20 million in punitive damages.

In March 2016, the state medical examiner ruled that Gynnya died from natural causes.
