Family members outraged after graves desecrated

Loved ones angry after cemetery destroyed

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Family members are angry after finding the cemetery where their loved ones are buried significantly damaged.

Louis Ray and his wife Sandy were visiting a relative’s grave at St. Stephen’s Cemetery Saturday when they saw another visitor visibly upset.

The visitor’s family’s graves were ruined.

The Ray’s told WHAS11 News about 20 headstones appeared to have been moved and even more run over – possibly by the cemetery’s backhoe.

When visitors tried to speak to the groundskeeper, they told WHAS11 News that person refused to open the door.

Sandy Ray says the incident is heartbreaking.

“I am shocked and horrified – and I hate that my family’s here to be very honest. I know that we’ve had trouble in the past trying to get it kept clean, trying to get headstones set and honestly at one point in time, I had to contact the Kentucky attorney general to get my own mother’s headstone set,” she said.

The Ray’s say they spoke to a neighbor Saturday afternoon who saw the backhoe being driven around the cemetery during the day Thursday but didn’t realize the damage that was happening.
