Emergency rooms put on alert for opioid overdoses

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Kentucky Health Officials are warning of heroin laced with Fentanyl that caused a rash of overdoses in Louisville. Emergency rooms across the Commonwealth should be on high alert and expect an increase in drug use over the holiday weekend.

The laced batch of heroin is much more toxic and can be lethal.

Local hospitals will increase staff, and health providers have been asked to stock extra naloxone since the laced heroin requires 2-3 doses of naloxone to reverse an overdose.

Tuesday evening, Louisville hospitals saw two dozen overdose patients. One overdose was fatal.
