LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- What would you do if doctors told you that you only had a few weeks to live?
For Ballard High School junior Amzie Smith, her goal was to simply make it to her birthday.
When we first met Amzie in September, she told us she tries to live her life one day at a time and appreciate the little things in life.
In doing so, she's left a lasting impact that we could all learn a little something from.
She’s a standout student who is everyone’s friend.
“Every day I’m filled with so much happiness walking around the school,” said Smith.
Behind that smile, Amzie Smith is fighting with the rigors of battling stage 4 liver cancer.
“I haven’t had a bad day in months,” said Smith. “It’s like I’m living on this high.”
Since her diagnosis, Amzie was named the Ballard Homecoming Princess.
“It just filled me with so much joy,” said Smith.
She has taken an all-inclusive trip to Disney and Universal.
“Every kid wants to feel that magic, and experience it,” said Smith. “You’re never too old for Disney.”
She celebrated an early birthday party at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium with members of the men’s basketball team.
“I’ve actually gotten to do a lot of cool stuff,” said Smith.
As Amzie continues to check items off of her bucket, list she admits her future becomes a little less certain.
“I don’t really know what to expect, but I just keep living like I’ve got all of the time,” said Smith. “At the same time, I’m living like there’s no tomorrow.”
It’s that positive attitude that Amzie hopes to pass along to her friends and family to carry on for the rest of their lives.
“When I’m gone I want people to walk through the hallways and still like I guess their memory of me, or my legacy of kindness to follow forward and be able to feel me in the hallways and continue to spread that kindness,” said Smith.
Amzie will be turning 17 on Saturday and said she gets to ride in a blimp, go pumpkin picking, and then camping with friends.
However there is one goal she's not sure if she will be able to accomplish and that's meeting Lamar Jackson.
