David statue downtown gets repairs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Driving downtown you may notice more covering than usual on the David statue outside of 21c Museum Hotel.

The 30 foot David statue, inspired by Michelangelo, stands at the corner of Seventh and Main Streets and is now undergoing repairs.

Officials at 21c said the statue is getting some much-needed repair, including a fresh coat of paint. The project is expected to take about two weeks.

“We have some professional art conservators here who are going to be filling in the cracks and then retouching and repainting those areas so it blends in with the rest of his beautiful golden self,” Alice Gray Stites, the chief museum curator, said.

21c said the David statue will be polished and ready in time to greet Derby visitors.
