Investigation into phone fire on flight

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- It was the smoking cell phone that caused a Southwest Airlines plane to evacuate and made headlines across the country. 
 
“The first thing I heard was a pop. When I looked over to pay attention from where that pop came from I noticed there was smoke coming out of my pocket,” said the phone's owner, Brian Green of New Albany.  
 
Green says his phone was a Galaxy Note7. He says this was a replacement phone, one he received after participating in Samsung's safety recall in September.
 
"It had been working good for me for the past two weeks, and today I powered down on the plane and it had its problems," said Green.
 
In a statement, Samsung said "Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note7."
 
Consumer Products Safety Commission Chairman Elliot Kaye says they will be working around the clock to get answers. They have investigators on the ground in Louisville.
 
"They're going to be examining the battery, examining the phone. Ideally, but I don't know if this will be the case, we'll be able to ship it back to our lab in Rockville, Maryland, and be able to look at it that much more closely. But at least what we're trying to do is figure out, and the issue you're getting to is, is this one of the replacement phones or is it not? Either way, something is going on that shouldn't be going on and we're trying to get to the bottom of it," said Kaye.
 
We reached out to Southwest Airlines to ask if this incident will change their warnings for their customers. 
 
They released a statement, that reads in part:
"We will continue to monitor this situation and follow the FAA guidelines. At this time, our Operations Agents will continue to make PA announcements regarding the Samsung recall in the gate areas during the boarding process and, prior to each flight, our Flight Attendants will continue to make announcements before leaving the gate. We began making these announcements in mid-September and included a travel advisory on Southwest.com."
