Teen goes viral after giving his shoes to homeless man

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but this one may be worth so much more.

A picture of a Louisville teen went viral after he literally gave the shoes off his feet to try and help a homeless man.

“I was a bad person,” said Laron Tunsil Jr.  “I used to steal, and all that kind of stuff.”

Laron Tunsil Jr, a.k.a. Ron Ron, is the first to admit he hasn’t always been the best kid but he’s fed up with what has been happening in his hometown.

“There’s been a whole lot of shooting,” said Tunsil Jr.  “There’s been a lot of black people shooting, and stealing, and breaking into people’s houses.  We just want peace in the community.”

He spent his Labor Day feeding the homeless when he came across this man.

“I didn’t know it’s a real struggle out here,” said Tunsil Jr.  “It’s a real struggle.  I sat down, and I was talking to the dude, and he told me his story so I started crying because it’s painful.”
That’s when Ron Ron did the unthinkable.

“I just gave him my shoes,” said Tunsil Jr.  “His shoes was out, toes was out, so I said here and unlaced them.  I took them off in front of him, and said here take these then.”

“I saw him on the Facebook giving away his shoes, and I was like what,” said Laron Tunsil Sr.  “It was for a good cause to help someone.  I believe in Jesus Christ, and I believe that it will come back to him.”

Ron Ron may never know what happened to the stranger, or his shoes, but he left the man with this message.

“I told him you can do whatever with the shoes, but just know that you’ve got a family! I mean it’s the right thing to do,” said Tunsil Jr.  “It doesn’t matter what they do with it as long as they know that there is somebody that really cares for me.”

“Purp Me” the group that Ron Ron was with when he donated his shoes has started a GoFundMe account to try and replace the shoes he gave away and raise funding so that he can make an even greater difference in his community.
