Churchill Downs racing with renovations

Reporter John Charlton takes viewers inside the renovations happening at Churchill Downs, just weeks from the Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Ahead of the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs is in the home stretch of its own race to finish up massive construction on Gate 17.

The track wagered $16 million, betting that everyone will love the major flip at the track.

“Most of the reconfiguration has transformed the space,” Churchill Downs Racetrack GM, Ryan Jordan, said on a tour of the new look.  “To allow people to move through it a little more easily.”

The old Clubhouse is just about a new one.  There are more concessions, more restrooms, more wagering, and more access to prime views outside, of the track as well as of the Paddock.  A new 2nd level balcony will be the best spot for pre-race views of the horses in the Oaks and Derby.

“You’re going to see all 20 horses in the Derby,” Kevin Flanery, Churchill Downs Racetrack President, said.  “All the excitement, all the fanfare.”

Some of the new attractions include the Gold Room, the Champions Bar and the Aristides Lounge.

Gate 17’s renovation also pays tribute to horse racing history.

Jordan put it best for first-time and repeat track visitors. “Really we’re trying to transform the experience, make it better.”
