LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Another shooting, another life lost on the streets late at night. Police received a call of a man of down in an alley around Kleier Avenue near G.G. Moore Park and when officers arrived 42-year-old Damon White was already dead.
“We haven't ruled out any factors at this point. It's very early in the investigation; we have officers out right now canvassing the neighborhood looking for potential witnesses,” LMPD public information officer Dwight Mitchell said.
Tanyal Jefferson lives just down the street from the alley where White was shot.
“He said ‘please don't kill me’ and the dude got on top of him and shot him even more. He killed him,” Jefferson said.
Jefferson's mother went to the scene fearing her son may be the victim. He wasn't, but now they said they are fearful of their own neighborhood..
“It’s unsafe scared to walk through the alley at night and through the park,” Jefferson said.
The murder happened at night, but by day this park is a nice safe place where kids can play. Now, neighbors said they are more concerned than ever.
“I don't take my son there no more at all,” Leeshinedia Davis said.
Davis said what goes on at night is reason enough to steer clear. She said there are people at the park drinking, gambling and drugs are prevalent.
“It makes it bad for anyone to walk through there during nighttime,” Davis said.
“The park is really calm for real. Some kids playing hide and seek, some kids playing basketball, people just come to play in the sprinklers,” Jefferson said.
Both Jefferson and Davis said they hope police can help - for them and for the children that need the park.
“Don't just ride during the day; ride at night too,” Jefferson said.
