Application deadline for JCPS Superintendent draws to a close

JCPS searches for new superintendent

LOUISVILLE, KY -- The state's largest school district is one step closer to finding a solution for their superintendent vacancy.

Applications for the Jefferson County Public Schools superintendent position must be in by midnight December 1st.

As of Tuesday night's board meeting JCPS only had two completed applications, one of which we assume to be from acting Superintendent Marty Pollio.

Bandy Carroll Hellige, the PR firm hired to assist in the search, told board members to expect around 20 applications total.

“If I’m successful in a job I would worry a lot about why you would apply frankly,” said Terry Brooks.

Terry Brooks is a former JCPS principal, who now heads up Kentucky Youth Advocates, and he says this job will take a special kind of educator.

“This is not a job just for someone who knows education,” said Brooks.  “You have to be bold to turn this ship around to focus on kids.”

Uncertainty surrounding the state audit could hurt the board in its search for top talent.

“Is the superintendent going to report to Frankfort or the local board,” said Brooks.  “What kind of stipulations?  If I’m sitting as an educator, and my job is not in jeopardy, I’ve got to wonder why you’re looking at that.”

JCPS hopes to have a superintendent in place by mid-March, but the state has yet to announce their plans for the district once the audit is complete.

“The state is going to have to exercise governing authority over local schools for a temporary period of time, but not forever,” said Brooks.

With that in mind Brooks says the next superintendent needs to have a knowledge of Kentucky politics, and the city of Louisville, if they’re going to lead the state’s largest school district.

“I think that Marty is a very strong choice if what you’re looking for is somebody who is going to deliver for kids,” said Brooks.  “I don’t know who else is in the pool.”

JCPS hopes to have a contract negotiated with their next superintendent by mid-March.
