American Red Cross opens shelter in Scott Co. after storm damage

Severe weather damages in Scott Co.

SCOTT CO., Ind. (WHAS11) -- Due to high winds caused by the overnight storms in Scott County, Ind., the American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Turning Point Church, located at 889 West McClain Avenue in Scottsburg. If you have any questions, call 812-752-7857.

It is easy to find storm damage along Jack Morgan Road in nearby Austin.

Ernest Williams says he parked his truck in his two car garage Tuesday night, " We just heard a big whistle but we had our cell phone alerts and stuff like that so we knew and we stayed in our basement.”

All along Jack Morgan Road, our crew found uprooted trees, debris and flooding all thanks to the March 1 storms.

Williams explains, "I just saw my garage was all scattered and stuff like that and my trailer turned upside down and all out in the road and stuff like that and all the debris.”

Linda Dawson, Scott County EMA  Director details, "It’s around 35 homes so far that that have reports of damage to the homes themselves, and we have about 24 roads at this time that are closed and we have crews working on them right now trying to get power lines and trees out of the road."

Williams tells us, "The main thing is to start picking up and cleaning up and taking pictures.”

There are no major injuries to report. Williams says his roof and other parts of his home also need repair, like so many others.

If you have damage to report, don’t call dispatch, call 812—752—0564.
