Air force highest honor awarded to Louisville man

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS 11)--A retired Airman from the Kentucky Air National Guard will receive the Air Force's highest honor, for his heroism during combat operations in Afghanistan.

Master Sgt. Keary Miller was a pararescueman 15 years ago during a grueling 17-hour siege in Afghanistan when a number of helicopters under fire were forced land or crash on a mountainside.

Miller originally received the silver medal for repeatedly risking his own life under enemy fire to save ten wounded U.S. service members while distributing ammunition to Army Rangers defending their position. He also managed to recover 7 men killed in the attack.

That award upgraded to the Air Force Cross which Miller will receive April 20.

The Kentucky Guard will Facebook Live the event at 4 p.m.
