LOUISVILLE, Ky. LOUISIVLLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A witness who was terrified to testify, Troya Sheckles, was ordered by the court to testify against Lloyd Hammond.

She was an eye witness to the murder of her boyfriend and pegged Hammond as the shooter.

In 2009, before she could take the stand, she was gunned down in crowded Shelby Park in broad daylight.

It's no surprise that witnesses in her alleged killer’s case suddenly remember little about what happened.

The identity of the witnesses is being concealed for their safety.

“Today I can't recall,” the witness said. “I can't recall.”

Steven Pettway is on trial for Sheckles murder.

Authorities say Lloyd Hammond's brother DeJuan put Pettway up to the murder - promising to take care of Pettway in exchange for killing the witness.

Hammond's former girlfriend took the stand Thursday afternoon. She originally told police that she informed Hammond that Sheckles was in the park that day. But now the details are fuzzy.

“I honestly can't recall that day as of right now,” the witness said.

Another key witness who says that Pettway told him he killed Sheckles had trouble recalling the day in question.

“You don't recall telling Detective Stalvey, ‘he killed that *****?’” the prosecutor asked.

“I don't recall,” another witness said.

Pettway’s trial is expected to go into next week.
