LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A Louisville daycare owner was in court Tuesday accused of repeatedly slapping an 18-month-old girl in the face because the child would not stop crying while in her care.

Tina Timberlake-Whitaker, 50, faces third degree criminal abuse. She pleaded not guilty in a Jefferson County District courtroom in downtown Louisville.

Timberlake-Whitaker allegedly ran an unlicensed daycare on Belmar Drive near the Audubon Country Club.

Kimberly Slaughter is the mother of 18-month-old Scarlett Slaughter and says after picking up her daughter last month from Timberlake-Whitaker’s daycare, Slaughter noticed bruises on her daughter’s face.

Slaughter says she had been using Timberlake-Whitaker’s daycare for three weeks before the incident happened. She says there were no problems until she noticed minor bruising on her daughter one day. Slaughter says when she asked about the bruises and Timberlake-Whitaker allegedly said her dog knocked over Scarlett.

Slaughter says three days later, on December 21, she noticed more bruises on her daughter at home after she picked up Scarlett from the daycare earlier that night.

“There was bruising behind her ear, inside her ear,” said Slaughter. “I waited for my husband to get home and then I went the emergency room. They told me it is clear that it is a hand print and she was beaten at least four or five times on the side of the face.”

Timberlake-Whitaker and here attorney refused to comment Tuesday.

She is due in court again on February 7.
