(WHAS 11) -- UPS has agreed to pay up big.

The shipping giant has agreed to a $40 million settlement in a federal investigation into deliveries for illegal online pharmacies.

UPS says it's taking steps to make sure it doesn't deliver for such businesses again.

Government investigators say UPS knowingly delivered prescription drugs without valid prescriptions for internet pharmacies between 2003 and 2010.

Under the agreement with the Justice Department UPS will forfeit $40 million in payments it took from those pharmacies.
