U of L Speed School going green using cooking oil to fuel campus bus

University of Louisville researchers are helping to fuel a campus shuttle with cooking oil.

Used cooking oil from the cafeterias is being turned into biodiesel that can be blended to power a U of L bus that shuttles Belknap campus students.

It's all part of a pilot project in the Speed School of Engineering.

“Starting off we are only going to be using a 5% blend then increasing it to 10 and maybe 20 percent,” said Eric Burns, Professor of Chemical Engineering.

The first shuttle runs have been on a blend of about 5% biodiesel. The group also hopes to convert waste glycerin to methane for electricity in the future.
